19 6. CONCLUSION The supervisee’s use of ethical principles and their integration of multiple theoretical frames of reference in their psychotherapy practice involves acquiring information in the theory, process, and techniques of psychotherapy; assimilating the various skills necessary to form a unique way of working with each person; and being fully present with their clients. Through the resolution of countertransference and life script issues the supervisee’s Self becomes the most important tool in psychotherapy. This outline of various approaches to supervision reflects my own supervision practice — a practice that has evolved and changed over the years. Although I have organized this article according to various phases of professional development, these descriptions of the phases of supervision do not have to be followed in a step- wise manner. It may be necessary in some cases to focus on the resolution of countertransference and life script issues early in supervision, to emphasize ethical principles, or to recycle through earlier phases of supervision. The purpose of supervision is to develop competent, ethical psychotherapists — psychotherapists who have the capacity for self-supervision and a commitment to find the most effective means of promoting the psychological and physical health of their clients.
